Community Engagement

BDC takes corporate social responsibility extremely seriously which is why we have created our special training programmes – and Mobile Baking Schools - for disadvantaged members of our community. To see the list of charities, societies, community organisations, NGOs - and more - that we have helped, please click here [link to BDC Alumni].

Recent corporate social responsibility initiatives

Ministry of Education
In 2008, BDC entered into an agreement with the Ministry of Education to train 971 female Primary and Secondary Schools teachers in Khartoum State. By teaching these women the art of pastry making, nutrition and family science, we were confident that they would pass this knowledge along to the many thousands of school children they teach every day. Our chefs and trainers designed special pastry courses which featured biscuits, cakes, Middle Eastern pastries and a range of savoury products. Almost one thousand women teachers trained at our BDC Resident Bakery School and the initiative was deemed to be educational, fun and a great success by all who took part.

Ministry of Health
The Ministry of Health and the Environmental Health Department approached BDC in 2008 to arrange an integrated bakery development course. Always happy to help, we put together a comprehensive training programme for 4,900 bakers in Khartoum State. During the course we introduced a refresher to the basics of bread making, and showed them how to make bread without using chemicals. The Ministry of Health also conducted a Safety and Hygiene refresher course.
